The Ministry of National Security has conducted preliminary investigations into the arrest of some 20 persons said to be National Security operatives and engaged in small-scale illegal mining.

According to an official statement issued on Friday, May 7, the investigations prove that the persons are not staff or operatives of the National Security Ministry.

The men were arrested by the youth of Akyem Akenteng in the West Akyem Municipality of the Eastern Region on Tuesday, May 4 for entering the Akenteng Forest Reserve to engage in illegal mining.

The men mentioned a contract staff of the National Security Ministry as the one who engaged them for the illegal activity.

“Upon completion of preliminary interrogation, both the arrested persons and their said contractor have all been remanded and are due to be arraigned before court,” the statement announced.

It assured the public that it remains fully committed to the fight against illegal mining in the country.

“The Ministry would also like to caution citizens against perpetrating crime under the guise of National Security.

“Persons found culpable shall face the full rigors of the law.”
