Supporters of three National Democratic Congress (NDC) aspirants in the Kumbungu Constituency have threatened to boycott Saturday’s primaries over accusations that one candidate has infiltrated the voters’ register with “foreign” names.
Supporters of Amadu Abdul-Kahad, Imoro Yakubu and Abdallah Baba Ibrahim demonstrated Friday night in the Northern Region, our correspondent said, against Ras Mubarak.
The Acting Chief Executive Officer of the National Youth Authority was accused of infiltrating the voters’ register with 537 names.
A meeting was held in the constituency, TV3’s Zakaria Abdul-Kadiri reported, between the three candidates and officers of the Electoral Commission to resolve the issue.
Auditing of the register according to registered voters in each polling station confirmed the excess numbers, our correspondent says.
The supporters waited into the night over the outcome of the meeting. They claimed if the issue is not resolved by Saturday morning, they would boycott the elections.
The development is making the constituency a flashpoint for Saturday’s primaries, TV3’s reporter adds.
