National Security Coordinator arrested for 'aiding' smugglers

The Volta Regional Coordinator of the National Security has been apprehended by the police for allegedly extorting monies from traders and aiding smugglers. The security coordinator, Apea Fenteng arrested by the police on Monday was said to have allegedly extorted monies from traders and aided them to smuggle goods from Togo into the country. Information gathered by TV3 indicates he was picked up by the police at Tsito were he was escorting a vehicle loaded with goods that had not been taxed to Accra. He has vehemently denied the allegations and has since been granted a self-recognizance bail. TV3’s Volta Regional correspondent, Robert Abilba told Bright Nana Amfoh on TV3 Midday Live Tuesday that he was told on phone by the suspect that he was arrested whilst undertaking his official duty. According to him, he had a tip off about the said goods being smuggled into Ghana and called for assistance from the police in the region but did not get the needed support. He therefore alerted his superiors in Accra who gave him the go ahead to apprehend the smugglers. Mr. Apea Fenteng claimed he received explicit orders from Accra to guard the smuggled goods to Accra which he was complying until his apprehension by the police. He was utterly surprised by the development, insisting the police was informed about that operation. The Regional Police Commander has denied giving directive for his arrest, TV3 gathered. The regional security council (REGSEC) was involved in a crunch meeting Tuesday afternoon to understand the situation and ascertain who actually gave the order for the arrest of the security operative, Robert Abilba reported. The suspect has not been told when to report to the police again and it is also not clear if the police will pursue the matter. By Isaac Essel |editors.3news.com | Ghana
