Lives needlessly lost in Obuasi, we wait outcome of investigations with keen interest – Barker-Vormawor

Convener of the Fix the Country Movement, Oliver Barker-Vormawor has said he is waiting patiently for the outcome of the investigations into the fatal clash at Obuasi mines.

A violent clash at a mining site in Obuasi resulted in the tragic deaths of up to eight individuals, believed to be illegal miners.

Barker-Vormawor observed that lives were needlessly lost during the clash.

“Thoughts and prayers for the lives needlessly lost in Obuasi. We wait the outcome of the investigations with keen interest,” he wrote on Facebook.

President John Dramani Mahama expressed deep regret over the incident and ordered an immediate investigation.

According to a statement issued on Sunday, January 19, and signed by acting spokesperson for the president Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the investigation aims to uncover the circumstances that led to the fatal clash and ensure that anyone found guilty of unlawful actions faces legal consequences.

The statement also noted that the government has called upon Anglo-Gold Ashanti, the mining company operating in the area, to cover the medical expenses of those injured in the clash.

The company has also been asked to assist with funeral arrangements for the deceased.

Security agencies have been instructed to restore peace to the area and implement preventative measures to avoid similar incidents in the future.
