Ghana’s latest Covid-19 case count has seen the total cumulative infections surpass 16,000.
After 597 new cases were recorded as of Thursday, June 25, according to the Disease Surveillance Department of the Ghana Health Service, the country’s tally from Day 1 when the disease was recorded is now 16,431.
By the adopted protocols of the World Health Organisation (WHO), the recoveries which are now joined to discharges are now 12,257.
Already, this protocol has been challenged by experts.
An immunologist, Dr Yaw Bediako of the West African Centre for Cell Biology of Infectious Pathogens (WACCBIP) of the University of Ghana, on TV3’s The Key Points on Saturday, June 27 questioned this method and insisted that the recoveries are not as they are.
For him, patients discharged, though asymptomatic, can still infect, contrary to the WHO recommendation that they cannot and so must not be declared as recovered.
He also stated that the country should expect more people being killed by the virus.
The deaths are currently at 103 and there were no additions from the last count.
As a result, the active cases are 4,071.
Regional breakdown
The Greater Accra continues to record high numbers, having gone beyond the 9,000-mark.
With a total of 9,164, it leads the regional breakdown. Out of the total, 7,043 have since recovered/discharged leaving 2,068 under care and treatment.
