Greater inter-ministerial collaboration for women’s development needed – UNICEF

The UNICEF Representative in Ghana, Susan Namondo Ngongi has called for greater inter-ministerial collaboration to improve the reach and quality of governmental efforts towards women’s development. She listed the Ministries of health, education and the entire judicial system as major players whose role will be needed to bring the collaboration to fruition. Madam Ngongi was speaking to 3FM’s current affairs programme “Late Edition” as part of the celebration of International Women’s Day which falls on March 8. The 2017 theme for International Women’s Day is “Be Bold for Change”. International Women’s Day celebrates the social, economic, cultural and political achievement of women. The progress has slowed in many places across the world, so global action is needed to accelerate gender parity. In 2016 leaders across the world pledged to take action as champions of gender parity. The UNICEF Country Representative decried the continuing gap between women and men, saying it was sad that women still earn less than men, while they still have greater and higher educational opportunities. “Men no doubt contribute a lot to women and societal development, but women must be given the opportunity to enjoy their rights,” Madam Ngongi added.
