Four galamseyers arrested at Wassa Amenfi East

Four illegal miners who were mining in River Mamie in the Wassa Amenfi East Municipality of the Western Region have been arrested.

The suspects were arrested during ‘Operation No Mercy’ launched to fight illegal mining in the area.

The operation was initiated by the Municipal Chief Executive, Fredrick Korankye, with the support of the local task force.

The operation also burnt four changfans which were being used for the illegal mining.

The suspects were handed over to the police, who are expected to arraign them before court Wednesday, October 19.

MCE Fredrick Korankye explained that the move was as result of the President’s meeting with the MMDCEs on the fight against galamsey.

He said the task force, made up of chiefs, the assembly, NADMO and other stakeholders, has given themselves two weeks to get rid of illegal miners on the Mamie River in order for the river to be clean.

Mr. Korankye explained that this will not be the end since illegal miners are destroying the water body.
