WiWASH partners schools to mark Menstrual Hygiene Day 2022

WiWASH, a network of professional women in the water, sanitation and hygiene sector, has partnered schools in the Weija/Gbawe municipality to mark this year’s Menstrual Hygiene Day.

The celebration, which was themed ‘Making Menstruation a Normal Fact of Life by 2030’ and took place at Weija Presby Church on Monday, May 30, sought to let schoolgirls at the event understand the importance of menstruation in the life of every woman and help them embrace the phenomenon as a normal fact of life.

In an address, the President of WiWASH, Mrs. Faustina Boachie, informed the girls that all women would experience between 150 to 450 periods in their lifetime and therefore encouraged them to be prepared for the journey ahead and manage their menstruation safely and with dignity.

“Better menstrual hygiene management is the path to better health, dignity and empowerment,” said Mrs. Boachie.

The WiWASH President also advised the schoolgirls to avoid the use of tissue papers, toilet rolls and such materials during menstruation as those materials had a high propensity to introduce them to infections.

In another address, a representative of the Ghana Health Service encouraged schoolboys to stop making fun of girls during their periods and rather take it upon themselves to help their own sisters at home and girl-colleagues in school to manage their menstruation with confidence.

The Management Committee of WiWASH, during an interview at the fringes of the event, expressed gratitude to the top management of Ghana Water Company Limited for supporting them to donate sanitary pads, soaps, tissues and other toiletries to the schools which participated in the celebration.

The leadership of WiWASH intimated that they had been celebrating Menstrual Hygiene Day and donating sanitary items to schools consistently for the last five years and Ghana Water Company Limited has always supported them immensely.

“Indeed, GWCL has supported all WiWASH programmes since its inception in 2017 and we are grateful to them,” the Management Committee said.
