Some 80,000 Ghanaians have so far been vaccinated in the second phase of the vaccination exercise, the Ghana Health Service (GHS) has said.
Some 244,000 more Ghanaians are expected to be vaccinated before the second phase of the exercise ends on Saturday, September 4 as scheduled.
The Head of the Expanded Programme on Immunization at the Ghana Health Service, Dr. Kwame Amponsah-Achiano, confirmed that “a third of Ghanaians has vaccinated and by tomorrow, if the 244,000 people expected to vaccinate have not gotten their jabs, we will extend the time. Irrespective of the time, we will make sure we complete the exercise”.
He was interacting with host of the Sunrise morning show on 3FM Alfred Ocansey on Friday, September 3.
Government is also expecting the arrival of some 1.22M Moderna vaccines on Saturday.
Touching on the plans for distribution, Dr. Amponsah-Achiano said the plan is to look for hot spots across the country.
“The strategy is to look at how the disease is spreading out and we shall ensure equitable distribution of the vaccine. We cannot put them all in one place so we get them to other areas.”
The exercise has, however, not been free of network challenges but the Ghana Health Service said those challenges were resolved on Wednesday.
“Network challenges have been a problem but we shall overcome it. It’s been quite stable since two days ago.”
The delivery of the Moderna vaccine to Ghana was delayed because the vehicle carting the vaccine was involved in an accident.
The World Health Organization has estimated that 26 Africans die every one hour from the Covid-19 pandemic while the continent lags behind in vaccinating its citizens.
