Launched on the 10th August, 2019, simultaneously with its sister station Onua TV at a grand ceremony in Kumasi, Akoma 87.9 FM has fast become a popular media force in the Ashanti Region; with media moguls like Aduanaba Kofi Asante, host of Kumasi’s most influential Akan morning show on Akoma FM, GhanAkoma, as well as the vivacious Akosua Addai Munumkum (Maa Akos), host of the nation’s hottest and most controversial afternoon Akan talk show, Akoma Mu Nsem, which is also broadcast live on Onua TV.

The station also boasts of big names like William Evans-Nkum, Ibrahim Abubakari, Beatrice Spio-Garbarah and Nana Konadu Yiadom in its arsenal of influential broadcast journalists.

This month of March celebrated as Ghana Month has seen an interesting, informative, educative and very innovative campaign by Akoma 87.9FM in Kumasi.

Under this campaign dubbed “Nananom Gyaa Y’ade3”, literally meaning “we have a great heritage from our ancestors”, the station embarked on a mission to unveil the unique traditions of the people of Ashanti through the platform of its various programmes including news features.

Throughout this month of March, there has not been a single show on Akoma FM which did not drive this single-minded campaign to showcase the beautiful tradition and culture of the people of Ashanti.

The campaign also premiered insightful documentaries dubbed ‘Nananom Gyaa Y’ade3’ series by Obibini Nana Akohene on Akoma FM’s social media pages as well as Onua TV.

Another interesting twist to the campaign was the history sessions on the GhanAkoma morning show with Aduanaba Kofi Asante where various academics and Akan historians revealed interesting historical accounts of the Ashanti people, as well as history of the African race in general.

Among notable historians who appeared on the show were Nana Ankomah Yeboah, Akan Historian; Peter King Appiah, Public Relations Officer at the Kumasi Cultural Centre; Nana Akosa Brempong, History Researcher; as well as Teacher Safo Kantanka, renowned historian at the Manhyia Palace.

Prominent chiefs such as Nana Fe Boama II, Chief of Asokwa; Nana Yaw Frimpong, Otumfuo Ntahara, also made appearances at Akoma FM and provided audience with interesting revelations about Ashanti history and culture.

The objective of the “Nananom Gyaa Y’ade3” Campaign is to project the proud heritage of our ancestors, promote the patronage of indigenous goods and services, in order to boost our economy through the creation of more jobs and commerce.

It is not a secret that chief among the reasons for the economic woes of Africa is the excessive thirst for foreign goods and culture. As a result, we Africans are always spending our limited foreign exchange on imported goods and services, leading to constant balance of trade deficits.

However, this paradigm can shift with a drastic change in attitude of Ghanaians (Africans) to patronise what is locally produced; be it food, clothing, music, movies, as well as patronage of internal tourist destinations.

According to the Marketing Manager of Akoma FM, Maxwell Ofori Nkrumah, the “Nananom Gyaa Y’ade3” campaign has come to stay, and will be the station’s annual campaign to drum home the message of “Wear Ghana; Eat Ghana and See Ghana”.

Because that is the only way by which Ghana, as well as Africa, can compete favourably with the advanced nations of the world, he said.

Akoma FM 87.9 in Kumasi, is a member of the Media General Group, Ghana’s leading media conglomerate.
