Think tank African Education Watch has backed a decision by the Ghana Education Service (GES) to dismiss some eight students of Chiana Senior High School for insulting President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo.
The students, all girls, were captured in a viral video raining expletives on the President.
The Service immediately launched investigations into the video, coming out with a decision this year.
In a letter to one of the parents communicating its decision, the GES said the conduct of the girls were “considered very undesirable and contrary to the acceptable standards of conduct generally required of any student in our educational system in Ghana”.
The decision has generated public controversy with many describing it as too harsh.
But Eduwatch says inasmuch as it sympathises with the students, it supports the decision by authorities to dismiss them.
“As stakeholders, we must allow schools to discipline students in line with approved rules,” it said.
“The continuous interference in school discipline has contributed to the growing indiscipline which is affecting effective teaching and learn in our SHSs.”
It recommended to the students to appeal the decision if they consider it “unfair”.
