Ghana forward Jordan Ayew has called for rapid improvement in the Black Stars following their opening game defeat to Cape Verde in the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations (2023).

The Black Stars who came into the game determined to redeem themselves from their previous disappointment in the 2021 edition face further difficulties as the resilience of the Blue Sharks proved tougher on Sunday night.

After fighting from behind to get Alexander Djiku to cancel Jamiro Monteiro’s early goal, Ghana failed to maintain composure and gave up on the dying embers of the game losing 2-1.

Jordan Ayew who provided the assist for Ghana’s goal from a corner kick admitted the team’s shortcomings and emphasised the need to adapt quickly despite the youthfulness of the squad. According to him, it’s better to go all out the hard way than to give excuses.

“Disappointed because we had the game in our hands and lost concentration in crucial moments conceding two sloppy goals,” the Crystal Palace forward told 3Sports after the game.

“As a team, we need to adapt quickly. We can’t always say it’s a young team because we’ve played together for two or more years”

Meanwhile, he expressed hope in the team’s remaining matches against Egypt and Mozambique hoping to turn it around.

“It’s a tough one for us and we have two games left and we need to stay positive. We don’t have a choice we have to do it the hard way and see the outcome.”
