Black Stars defender Alexander Djiku has highlighted the need for massive improvement in Ghana’s team as they prepare to face Egypt after an opening game defeat at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The Black Stars faced a shocking defeat against Cape Verde at the Felix Houphouet Boigny Stadium on Sunday night losing 2-1 courtesy of a 17th-minute strike from Jamiro Monteiro and a late finish from Garry Rodriques.

Djiku was however a standout performer for the Black Stars heading home an equaliser from Jordan Ayew’s corner which was not enough. His performance earned recognition as he was named the Man of the Match despite the defeat.

Reacting after the game, Djiku expressed his dissatisfaction at the team’s commitment calling for rapid improvement in their subsequent games.

“So difficult but we need to do more. We need to do more aggressively. We need to play more and create more chances and score. We have lost and we need to win our second game,” The Fernabahce centre-back told 3Sports.

The Black Stars, now aiming to redeem themselves in their next game against Egypt on Thursday are bottom of group B.
