Ghana will renew their football rivalry with Egypt as the two powerhouse teams are set to face off in the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament in Ivory Coast.

The draw, held in Abidjan, revealed that these two teams, boasting a combined total of 11 AFCON titles, will meet in the group stage.

Ghana, a four-time African champion, were placed in Pot 2, and many expected them to face formidable opposition. However, they managed to avoid African champions Senegal, the host nation Ivory Coast, and the in-form Morocco. Instead, they will go up against Egypt, who were finalists in the previous edition of the tournament in Cameroon.

The Black Stars had a lacklustre performance in the last tournament and are eager to redeem themselves. Ghana and Egypt have a storied history, with Egypt emerging victorious over Ghana in the 2010 final and repeating their triumph when the two teams faced off in 2017 during the group stage in Gabon.

Joining Ghana and Egypt in the group are Cape Verde and Mozambique.

The draw also unveiled other intriguing matches, with Senegal commencing their trophy defence against Cameroon, and Ivory Coast set to take on Nigeria.

The 2023 AFCON is scheduled to kick off on January 13, 2024, with the final match set for February 11, 2024.
