UEW reinstates sacked lecturers
The dismissed staff of the University of Education, Winneba (UEW) will be reinstated, editors.3news.com has gathered. High-placed sources confirmed on Thursday that the staff including local President of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) Dr Frimpong Kaakyire Duku will return to post. The sacking, suspension and demotion of about 30 staff by the Governing Council triggered a spate of protests from the student body. Chaos during protests on Thursday led to the indefinite closure of the school by the Central Regional Security Council. The protesting students in demanding the reinstatement of the sacked lecturers called for the head of the Vice Chancellor, Reverend Professor Anthony Afful-Broni. The Vice Chancellor authored the dismissal letter to the staff.
Some of the sacked lecturers were said to have taken a legal action contrary to the University’s regulations, challenging the removal of former VC Prof Mawutor Avoke. “You used institutional time to go to court without seeking official permission,” Rev Prof Afful-Broni’s letter to Dr Duku – sighted by editors.3news.com – said. But all the sacked lecturers will be reinstated in an effort to restore academic life at UEW, editors.3news.com’s source said. Others will have their sanctions reviewed, the source said.
