MP condemns Police, KTI clash; wants probe into the incident

The Member of Parliament for Subin Constituency, Eugene   Boakye Antwi has called for an immediate investigations into the recent disturbances involving some police personnel and students of the Kumasi Technical Institute (KTI). About 14 people were injured when students of the KTI who were returning from the Kumasi Sports Stadium where they participated in an inter-collages athletic competition clashed with some police officers on January 14, 2017. The students who were celebrating their fourth place in the competition were said to have blocked roads leading to their school, causing serious vehicular traffic. A team of police officers were dispatched to ensure law and order but the situation degenerated when the students refused to heed the call of the team to disperse. Speaking on the matter on the floor of Parliament Tuesday, Mr Antwi condemned the conduct of both the police and the students, and wants the Police CID to investigate. “Mr. Speaker, the conduct of the students was reprehensible and needed to be stopped. Notwithstanding, the high – handed approach adopted by the Police Service is most regrettable and condemnable,” he said. The MP added: “The unreasonableble use of teargas, live bullets, etc in controlling the students who upon the appearance of the police at the scene had started running for their dear lives, is most unfortunate” He argued the investigation by the CID would help to unearth the real antecedents to the unfortunate event as well as proffer solutions to prevent such situation from occuring in the future. Mr Antwi however, pleaded with the parents whose wards were affected to take heart and allow the appropriate authorities to deal with the matter by resorting to dialogue and due process to resolve the matter.
