KNUST alumni in crunch meeting over shutdown

Alumni of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) are set to be locked up in a meeting Tuesday, following a shutdown of the school. The premier university in the Ashanti Region was closed down indefinitely on Monday after students went on rampage to protest claimed brutality by the campus security personnel. Property worth thousands of Cedis was vandalized while many including the personnel ran for their lives. After an assessment of the extent of damage caused, the Regional Security Council (REGSEC) ordered a dusk-to-dawn curfew on Monday while asking all Ghanaian students to vacate the halls of residence latest by midday Tuesday. Speaking on 3FM’s breakfast programme, Sunrise, an Ex Officio Member of the KNUST Alumni Association, Dr Tony Danklu, condemned the action by the students. He said Monday’s “unfortunate” rampage has become “costly” to all stakeholders of the university. He said some members of the Association will be part of investigations to be conducted into the incident. An alumnus was arrested as part of 11 persons who scuffled with campus security on Friday. Dr Danklu absolved the Association of any blame, saying that alumnus was on campus in his individual capacity and would be dealt as such. He said the Association will head to the university after its meeting, to be held in an unknown location in Tema, to help resolve the impasse. Meanwhile, Vice President of the Association Dr Kwaku Agbesi has expressed optimism that a “lasting solution” will be found. He said the alumni were in the know about the demonstration, as communicated by the Students’ Representative Council (SRC), but did not anticipate the extent of violence by the students. He was speaking to Bright Asempa on Onua FM’s Yen Sempa on Tuesday. Source: editors.3news.com|Ghana
