The Ministry of Education has said teachers who hold certificates acquired through Distance Learning qualify to teach at the Senior High School level, contrary to reports that the Ministry has issued a directive denying such teachers an opportunity to teach.
According to the Ministry, there is no policy from them nor the Ghana Education Service which exempts such teachers from teaching at Senior High Schools.
In a statement issued and signed by the Ministry’s Public Relations Officer, Vincent Ekow Assafuah, there are specific courses acquired through the Distance Learning programme that is unacceptable and renders a teacher unqualified to teach at the SHS level.
“The official position is that a degree in Early Childhood Education or Basic Education whether through Sandwich or Campus program, does not constitute eligibility to teach at a Senior High School.
“For the avoidance of doubt, a degree in a subject area whether through Distance or campus program, qualifies one to teach in a Senior High School, in addition to meeting other requirements set by the National Teaching Council and Ghana Education Service.”
The Ministry explained that contrary to perceptions that suggest any degree at all qualifies one to teach at the SHS level, a degree acquired in Early Childhood Education or Basic Education is not included, and that it only qualifies a teacher to teach at the basic level.
