The African Foundation for Educational Development (AFFED), has asked authorities to punish invigilators who engage in acts of examination malpractice.

AFFED says it has followed with keen interest the ongoing Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) and the unwelcoming acts of teachers and invigilators that have emanated from some centres.

The BECE started across the country on Monday November 15.

AA statement issued by AFFED and signed by its Executive Director Ernest Kwame Adade, said “as a Civil Society Organisation that is interested in improving educational standards in Ghana and Africa by extension, it is imperative to make the facts clear that the purpose of BECE is not to select students who have passed from those who have failed.

“It is a means to test the strength and weaknesses of the students to help make an informed decision about life.

“AFFED is therefore disappointed in the invigilators and teachers who have taken up the responsibility of taking money to assist candidates by every means possible during the Examination.

“Such practice is unprofessional, uncalled for and undermines the integrity of the teaching profession.”

It added “It is on this note that AFFED, calls on the Ministry of Education, Ghana Education Service and West Africa Examination Council to put measures in place to apprehend all teachers and or invigilators who are found culpable and have them face the full rigours of the law.

“Such persons who champion examination malpractice must be severely penalised to save the quality of Ghana’s examination system.

“The war against examination malpractice demands a collective effort etched in commitment.”
