Ghana’s fastest man, Abdul-Rasheed Saminu, has opened up on why he opted out of the 200m event at the Olympic Games.
Saminu says it was his decision not to partake in the event despite being eligible.
Saminu qualified for the 100m and 200m events at the Olympic Games in Paris last summer but only took part in the 100m, where he finished in the semi-finals.
Despite being a natural 200m sprinter, Saminu told 3Sports’ Bill Eshun that he was not at the required physical levels.
“The 200m was just my decision. Typically, I’m a 200m guy. When I have more endurance, I like it more. I was 200m athlete, but then my endurance level wasn’t that good because I was done with my season for like a month.”
Saminu, who was a core part of Ghana’s relay team, was left to choose between the 4*100m relay event and the 200m.
“I never ran 200m again. Most especially, the 4*100m needed me, and they don’t want me to run three races at the same time. So I just dropped the 200m and jumped to the 100m and 4*100m. Unfortunately, we couldn’t make it, it was quite disappointing.
Saminu has left the disappointment of Paris behind, leading the way as the fastest man in the world in 2025 with an impressive 9.86s.
