70 youth in Awutu Senya East receive fingerlings to start aquaculture business

About 70 youth in Awutu Senya East in the Central Region have benefited from the Aquaculture for Food and Jobs Programme.

They have received tapolins, fingerlings and fish feed for start-up after undergoing two days intensive training in fish farming.

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo in August unveiled the Aquaculture for Food and Jobs Programme.

The initiative forms part of government’s commitment to sustainable development, food security, and job creation.

The minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture Development, Mavis Hawa Koomson, addressing the media after officially distributing fingerlings and fish feed to first batch of beneficiaries of the programme, reiterated government’s commitment to bridge the gap between demand and supply of seafood.

The programme, according to her, equally aims at promoting fish farming as well as to aid government to reduce importation of seafood.

“For government to bridge the gap of demand and supply of seafood, we need to encourage fish farming to complement governments effort “.

“So that the government would be able to reduce the importation of seafood,” the Minister re-emphasised.

The Awutu Senya East legislator explained that the policy seeks to empower over 10,000 youth in fish farming.

She indicated that beneficiaries will be selected from the various assemblies irrespective of their political affiliations.

She revealed, each beneficiary will receive 5,000 fingerlings, fish feeds estimating 38,500 cedis each.

The Minister entreated the youth to take advantage of the programme to enhance their future.
