Yaw Yeboah strike qualifies Black Meteors for CAF U-23 tourney

A second half strike by captain Yaw Yeboah has sent the Black Meteors through to the Africa U-23 Cup of Nations to be staged in Egypt. The goal gave Ghana a 2-1 aggregate win over Algeria. Ghana drew 1-1 with the North Africans in the first leg played at the Accra Sports Stadium last Friday. After the Algerians scored an early goal in that game, Ghana’s Olympic football team had things difficult as Yeboah failed to convert a penalty. Though the Meteors equalized through another spot-kick, the journey to Algiers was going to be a tall order given West African performances in that region of Africa. But Ibrahim Tanko’s side pulled a big surprise by beating their opponents 1-0 on Tuesday night. Ghana will thus join hosts Egypt, Cameroon, Ivory Coast, Mali, Nigeria, South Africa and Zambia for the tournament, which starts on Friday, November 8. It will be the first time Ghana will participate in the tournament, which is in its third edition. Ghana will seek to be among the three nations that will make it to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, having last made an appearance at the global multi-sport even in men’s football in 2004 in Athens.
