Argentina were greeted by jubilant crowds at the Buenos Aires airport, and the country has declared Tuesday a bank holiday after winning the 2022 World Cup.

The team, which defeated France in the final on Sunday, returned home at 2:24 local time on Tuesday.

Fans lined the streets as they rode in an open-top bus to the headquarters of their Football Association.

The main celebration will be at the capital city’s Obelisk monument at midday.

The Argentine government said the day would be a holiday so fans “can express their deepest joy for the national team”.

Lionel Messi led the team off the plane, which carried his picture on its tail.
