Former Black Stars captain Asamoah Gyan has jumped to the defense of misfiring attacker Inaki Williams citing the African environment as a hindrance to his effectiveness.

The Athletic  Bilbao forward switched nationality from Spain to Ghana in June 2022 and was included in then Black Stars coach Otto Addo’s final squad for the World Cup in Qatar. Williams who played three friendly matches before the tournament failed to score despite playing all the matches for Ghana at the competition.

The story was no different when the team engaged Angola on Thursday securing a win courtesy of a late strike from Semenyo who replaced Inaki Williams in the game.

Williams’ inability to score has begun raising concerns among the fanbase but Asamoah Gyan says all the player needs is to be given more time to integrate himself into the African atmosphere.

According to him, Williams will take Ghana by storm as soon as his debut goal arrives.

“It’s very difficult to adjust to the African game, He has played in Europe all his life.

“We need to give him more opportunities, he is improving even though he hasn’t found his feet yet but I’m sure his first goal will open the floodgates and many more will follow.

“His first goal will boost his confidence level. Let’s keep supporting him,” Gyan told Akoma FM.

With seven points, Ghana will seek a win against Angola in the reverse fixture to secure a place in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) slated for next year in Ivory Coast.
