Azamati clocked 10.13 seconds in Heat 7, and it was not enough to secure him a place in the next round of the competition.
Ghanaians, having followed closely the exploits of Azamati this year, including smashing the national record with 9.97, were confident of the 23-year-old making a big impression on his Olympic Games debut.
“Sorry Nation! I couldn’t turn up. Things will get better next time. Realized my mistakes and I would take it from there. Happy for the support from y’all! I feel loved and mentally I am there. I will keep my head up and focus on the next race,” he wrote on Twitter.
Azamati was in lane 6, next to Jamaican Yohan Blake who was surprisingly beaten by Australian Rohan Browning, with Chijindu Ujah of Great Britain coming third.
Azamati’s Olympic dream is, however, not over as he is a key member of Team Ghana’s 4x100m relay team.
Earlier, Black Bombers captain Sulemana Tetteh was beaten by Cuban boxer Yosvany Veitía in the men’s flyweight.
