Asante Kotoko extended their unbeaten streak to seven games with a 2-0 win over Bofoakwa Tano at the Sunyani Coronation Park. The victory propelled them to second place in the Ghana Premier League standings, marking a strong turnaround after a sluggish start to the season.

Ugandan forward Steve Mukwala was the hero of the day, bagging a brace that sealed the crucial win for Kotoko. His first goal came in the 20th minute, when he calmly finished into an empty net after the onrushing goalkeeper failed to clear the ball. Mukwala doubled his tally in the 80th minute, tapping in from close range after a superb play by midfielder Richmond Lamptey.

Lamptey’s performance was yet another display of his growing influence in the Kotoko squad, further solidifying his case for a call-up to the Ghana national team for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations tournament in Ivory Coast.

Mukwala’s brace took his league tally to seven goals, leaving him just two behind current top scorer Isaac Mintah. The Ugandan striker is now firmly in contention for the Golden Boot Award, and his impressive form bodes well for Kotoko’s title aspirations.

Elsewhere, Samartex consolidated their position at the top of the table with a comprehensive 3-1 win over Accra Lions on Friday. Bibiani Goldstars also produced an impressive performance, defeating Legon Cities 4-2, while defending champions Medeama were held to a draw by Karela United in Tamale.
