Former Ghana captain Stephen Appiah on Thursday afternoon issued a statement in which he denied claims made by the controversial socialite Abena Korkor.

Abena Korkor, recently, stated that she has had a sexual affair with Appiah, who is married with kids, with one aiming to become a professional footballer just like his retired father.

But Appiah described her claims as false, baseless and unfounded in a bid to ensure that his hard-earned reputation is not ruined.

“My attention has been drawn to viral publications that on social media suggesting that I have had an amorous relationship with one Miss Abena Korkor,” Appiah began his statement.

“The said publications are only not false, baseless and unfounded, but they are also mischievous and fanciful conjectures of the said author.

“I am constrained to respond to this needless provocation because that false and offensive narrative strikes at the very core of my hard won reputation, both at home and abroad.”

He added, “Let me place it on record that I have never encountered the said author in any special way other than at a few open and public events where she sought my permission to take photos with me.”

“I entreat my family, friends, and well-wishers to disregard the offensive and provocative publications and treat it with the contempt that it deserves,” Appiah concluded.

Appiah, who retired from football in 2012, works with many top companies in the country as a brand ambassador.

The former Juventus and Fernabahce midfielder won 67 caps for Ghana and scored 14 goals.

He is regarded by many as Ghana’s greatest captain having led the Black Stars to a maiden World Cup in 2006. He featured in the 2010 tournament in South Africa and was part of the technical team for the 2014 edition in Brazil.

Black Stars this month will hope to secure a fourth appearance as they face Nigeria in the final qualifying round for the 2022 World Cup.
