The General Manager of Sustainability at the Ghana National Petroleum Commission (GNPC), Dr Kwame Baah-Nuakoh has cautioned the country to watch out for sports betting currently warming its way into football and sports in general. Football in the country has come under strict scrutiny after a video documentary by Anas Aremeyaw Anas and his Tiger Eye PI firm exposed detailed corruption in football administration. Speaking to Asempa Sports, Dr. Baah-Nuakoh lamented that sports betting also has the potential to corrupt the game if care is not taken. “One other thing they should be watching out is sports betting which has become part of our game. Betting also has the potential of corrupting the game.” He therefore implored that the ongoing reforms at the Ghana Football Association must be comprehensive and also address player welfare. “The reforms have to be more comprehensive, player welfare is also an issue. This is the time for government to invest in the game.” Dr. Nyakoh who has some knowledge in football administration  said  the FA has over the years overlooked some of its regulations which ought to be taken a serious relook. “In the FA’s regulations the FA had the power to deal with finance malpractices in every club. For instance if a Club Chairman is mismanaging club funds the FA had the power to step in. How many times did the FA do that? There are so many things. If government wants to have a say in how the FA is run, government has to put money in club football.” Currently, a two-member committee has been agreed by the government of Ghana and FIFA to lead the reforms in Ghana football.
