Southampton manager Ruben Selles has explained the root of Ghana forward Kamaldeen Sulemana’s impressive display against Liverpool in the English Premier League on Sunday.

In the final round of matches, the pacey winger registered his first goals for the Saints as his brace helped his team manage a thrilling 4-4 draw at the St. Mary’s Stadium.

After the game, Selles revealed that the setup of Liverpool was right for the skillset of Sulemana to be utilised indicating the absence of key players from the Red’s matchday squad.

“The game today was beneficial for him because Liverpool’s structure is not exactly there, (Virgil) van Dijk didn’t play, (Andrew) Robertson didn’t play, so they brought players in they do not usually play,” he said.

“So we knew we can have possibilities to give him some freedom in the number nine position, on the counterattack with penetration and also come a little bit deeper to get the ball.

“He did this today in a game that was not a brilliant structure from both teams, but he has learned the competition and learned the level and yes sometimes you need a little bit of time to get that level of performance.

The result didn’t have any impact on both teams since their fates had been decided prior to kick-off. Southampton were confirmed relegated a few weeks ago while Liverpool had already settled for Europa League football after Manchester United hindered them with a win over Chelsea during midweek.
