Mohammed Salisu continued his impressive start to the new season by scoring his first goal for Southampton who were lucky to avoid Carabao Cup third round exit against Championship side Sheffield United.

Salisu returned to the starting lineup after excelling as a substitute in the impressive stalemate at Etihad against Manchester City and he found the net for Saints at Bramall Lane.

Sheffield took the lead after eight minutes but strikes from Ibrahima Diallo and Mohammed Salisu turned the game on its head. The Ghanaian turned in a cross close range to give the visitors the lead for the first time in the match.

But the home side fought back to force a penalty shootout. Goalkeeper Fraser Foster was the hero saving two spot kicks as Southampton won 4-2.

Salisu will be delighted with the victory as well as his first goal which took him over a year to score. It’s however fitting the goal came at the time that he is absolutely in terrific form and consistently churning out impressive displays.

He was man of the match despite Southampton losing to Manchester United last month and produced a similar performance against City at the weekend.

Despite his exploits at club level, Salisu feels he is not ready to play for the Black Stars. The 22-year-old has not received a call-up since turning down his first invitation in November 2019.
