Winnifred Ntumi has won Ghana’s first medal at the 2023 African Games, taking silver in the women’s 49kg snatch weightlifting event.

She competed against Ny Hasina Andrimitantsoa Zo Lalainarinirina of Madagascar, Tunisia’s Tasnim Ben Wada, and Sheridane Pasnin of Mauritius, placing second.

This marks the first medal for host nation Ghana after seven days of competition.

Ghana will hope to claim more medals following Ntumi’s success.

Ghana joins Uganda, Botswana, and Cameroon, all of whom have won a medal each.

Egypt continues to lead the medal count with 39 medals secured so far, followed by Algeria with 26, and South Africa with 13.

The medal table was last updated on Saturday night.

Meanwhile, the men’s cycling event was delayed for over an hour on Sunday due to an unexpected issue.

The ambulance assigned to the event had run out of fuel, leaving athletes worried and uncertain about the status of the competition.

The delay was finally resolved, allowing the event to begin, but it was yet another setback for Ghana’s hosting of the multisport event.
