Nyantakyi charged with fraud & corruption over Anas exposé

Former President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) Kwesi Nyantakyi has been charged at an Accra High Court with three counts, namely conspiracy to commit crime, fraud by agent as well as corruption by a public officer. Mr Nyantakyi was charged together with the former Northern Region Chairman of the GFA, Abdulai Alhassan. This is in connection with the exposé by Tiger Eye PI led by journalist Anas Aremeyaw Anas on the activities of the GFA. They were, however, granted a bail of GH¢1 million with three sureties, one to be justified. They are to reappear on Wednesday, March 25 for a case management conference. The exposé aired in June, 2018 led to the resignation of Mr Nyantakyi from his various roles including First Vice President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF). A journalist of Tiger Eye PI posed as an investor representing Chairman of Qatari company Medgulf, HH Sheikh Hammad Al Thani. The firm expressed interest to sponsor the Ghana Premier League and engage in other activities. Mr Nyantakyi portrayed himself as a powerful person when he met three men who posed as representatives of Medgulf at the Jood Palace Hotel in Dubai on October 7, 2017. The renowned football administrator said he could even influence the President of Ghana and the Vice President as he had them “in his pocket”. He had demanded $12 million from the supposed investors and promised to share it among the some state officials including the Minister of Roads and Highways and his deputy. But after receiving a part payment, Mr Nyantakyi is reported to have made several demands which Tiger Eye PI’s representatives refused. The journalists, consequently, lodged a complaint with the police, leading to the arrest of Mr Nyantakyi. One of the journalists, Ahmed Hussei-Suale, who led in the investigations was shot dead multiple times on the evening of January 16, 2019 while leaving his Madina family house. No headway has of yet been made by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service in grabbing the killers since the gruesome murder. “As a family, we thought by now the state could have brought closure to this matter by arresting and prosecuting those behind such hideous and heinous crime but it appears that that remains a mirage and a tall order for the state,” a family member lamented during the one-year anniversary of the death held in Accra.
