Athletic Bilbao striker, Inaki Williams, has revealed that his mum, Maria, is delighted that he will one day wear the Black Stars jersey.
The 28-year-old revealed a video on Tuesday announcing his nationality switch from Spain to Ghana, shocking fans across the globe.
Before this, he had rejected calls from Ghana to switch on multiple occasions, revealing that his mother was worried for him then.
“I’m grateful to where I grew and became who I am. Ghana tried to convince me, but I was born in Spain, in Bilbao. I won’t ever forget my family roots, but I feel Basque and can’t con anyone. I would be comfortable with Ghana, I’m sure, but I shouldn’t be there …,” he told the Guardian
“And my mum knows how people live football there: it’s quite something, and she’d be worried about me,” he said.
In an exclusive interview with TV3, he admitted that his mother was indeed worried but she’s happy now.
“My mum knows the pressure and she is protective of her kids. She is excited [now] because all the people I know keep telling me [to play for] Black Stars. She was scared because I am her kid but when I came here and she heard the people encouraging me for Black Stars, she is now very happy.”
Williams has played 272 La Liga games so far in his career, scoring 54 goals and dishing out 32 assists. His addition is a boost for Otto Addo who looks to improve his attacking options ahead of the World Cup.
