Asante Kotoko and Hearts of Oak stayed in contention for the double as they both progressed to the next stage of the MTN FA Cup.

Kotoko and Hearts are neck and neck in the Ghana Premier League title race with 53 points each and are hot favourites in the cup competition after impressive wins this weekend.

On Saturday, the Porcupine Warriors beat Thunderbolt FC 3-1 in a local derby in Ejisu following a dominant display.

Evans Amoako – two goals – and Emmanuel Gyamfi were the goalscoring heroes, helping Kotoko reach the round of 16.

24 hours later, Hearts of Oak also secured qualification by beating a third-tier club 4-1 at the Accra Sports Stadium. Windy Professionals were courageous, but the Phobians proved too strong, especially in the second half where they scored all four goals.

Hearts goals came from Daniel Afriyie, Emmanuel Nettey, Benjamin Afutu and Umar Manaf, with Jamel Hola Selorm getting the consolation for Windy.

Elsewhere, the Western derby between Karela United and Medeama in Aiyinase was overshadowed by hooliganism. According to Ghanasoccernet.com, Karela fans attacked Medeama, resulting in a damaged bus and some players bloodied.

The match ended 2-1 in favour of Medeama.

Ghana Premier League clubs AshantiGold Great Olympics, Berekum Chelsea, Aduana Stars and Elmina Sharks all progressed, but WAFA were knocked out on penalties by second-tier side Young Wise FC in Dobro.
