There will be a minute’s silence in memory of the late Christian Atsu at St James’ Park on Saturday night ahead of the Premier League match between Newcastle United and Liverpool.

The Ghanaian was confirmed dead on Saturday morning after being trapped in the rubble for nearly 12 days following Turkey’s devastating earthquake.

Atsu had a special relationship with Newcastle United, having represented the Premier League club between 2016 and 2021, making 121 appearances.

Initially joining on loan, he played a key role in the Magpies squad that secured the Championship title in 2017 before making a permanent move to help the club establish their place back in the Premier League.

After leaving St. James’ Park in 2021, he joined Saudi Pro League side Al Raed FC before moving to Turkey with Hatayspor in the summer of 2022.

Atsu was 31.
