Mamelodi Sundowns made history by becoming the first-ever African Football League (AFL) champions, defeating Wydad Casablanca 3-2 on aggregate.

The South African side trailed 2-1 going into the second leg, but a spirited performance at Loftus Versfeld Stadium in Pretoria saw them overcome their Moroccan opponents.

Peter Shalulile opened the scoring for Sundowns just before halftime, capitalizing on a rebound after Youssef El Motie parried Teboho Mokoena’s shot. Aubrey Modiba doubled the lead five minutes into the second half, intercepting a poor pass and racing through to score.

Wydad pushed hard to get back into the game, but Sundowns’ disciplined defence held strong. Despite several yellow cards for time-wasting, the South Africans managed to see out the match and secure the title.

Rulani Mokwena’s tactical masterclass proved crucial in Sundowns’ victory. His team’s ability to weather Wydad’s early pressure and exploit their mistakes was key to their success.

This historic triumph marks a significant milestone for Sundowns, who are now the first champions of the newly formed AFL. They became the first side to win AFL, CAF Champions League and CAF Super Cup.
