Black Stars have received a major boost for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) following the return of Mohammed Salisu from injury.

The former Southampton defender after several months on the sidelines has been named to the Monaco squad for their trip to Paris St-Germain on Friday night in the French Ligue 1.

Salisu after making a move to Monaco in the previous transfer window has seen his debut delayed after failing to recuperate from his injury thereby prompting a surgery which seem to have proved beneficial.

The 24-year-old who began facing fitness issues in March was unable to help the Saints retain their top-flight status as they suffered relegation at the end of last season in the Premier League.

He therefore moved on to the Ligue 1 where he now looks set to feature for AS Monaco having been chosen to the team by coach Adi Hutter as they gear up to face the champions of France.

Meanwhile, Salisu’s return provides Ghana with a huge boost as the Black Stars prepare for the 2023 AFCON with the team recently marred with several injuries.

Aside from Salisu who has missed all of Ghana’s games in 2023, Turkish-based centre-backs Daniel Amartey and Alexander Djiku have both had their share of injuries as well as Joseph Aidoo who has been ruled out of the competition after suffering a knock in the recent international friendlies against Mexico and the United States in October.

In other news, Tariq Lamptey has begun training with Brighton and Hove Albion as well further giving Ghana hopes in the backline which have struggled against opponents recently.

Ghana lost narrowly to Comoros in their second game of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers in Moroni having secured victory in their opening game against Madagascar at the Baba Yara Stadium courtesy of a late goal by Inaki Williams.
