Asante Kotoko Chief Executive Nana Yaw Amponsah has said the club are discussing the future of head coach Mariano Barreto, amid speculation the Portuguese could be replaced.

Barreto was appointed in March this year on a three-year deal but his failure to win any trophy last season coupled with his falling out with management has made him unpopular.

“[Kotoko] Management and the board are discussing whether the coach should stay or not,” Nana Yaw Amponsah revealed on Starr FM.

The former Black Stars coach in his first season lost the Ghana Premier League title to Hearts of Oak and suffered a quarter-final exit in the MTN FA Cup.

Barreto before leaving Ghana lamented the state of the club, saying the Kumasi-based outfit currently does not qualify to be called a “big team”.

“I know Asante Kotoko fans won’t be happy with this but I must say it,” Barreto told Nhyira FM on Thursday.

“Asante Kotoko is only a big name and not a big team because they lack so many things a big team should be having.

“A big team should have their own physiotherapy room, a strong youth team, philosophy, video room, amongst other infrastructure.”
