Ghanaian football journalist, Jerome Otchere, has expressed strong reservations about the possibility of George Boateng taking over as interim coach of the Black Stars, should Chris Hughton be sacked.

Hughton’s future as coach of the national team is set to be discussed at an upcoming Executive Council meeting of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) on Friday, with some members advocating for his dismissal following recent poor performances.

Assistant coach Boateng has been mentioned as a possible interim replacement, but Otchere is opposed to the idea. In a post on social media, he wrote, “George Boateng will be an utter disaster even in the interim. What really are his credentials? It’ll lend further credence to the growing notion that the system is joking around with the Black Stars.”

Boateng has been part of the Black Stars setup since early 2022, serving as assistant coach under Otto Addo during the team’s successful World Cup qualifying campaign. However, Otchere questions his suitability for the role, suggesting that his lack of experience and credentials would make him unfit to lead the team.

Hughton, who was appointed in February, has come under pressure following consecutive defeats to Mexico and United States in the October international break. Despite qualifying Ghana for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, his future with the team remains uncertain. The GFA Executive Council is set to decide his fate, with some members pushing for his dismissal ahead of the upcoming 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Madagascar and Comoros.
