Inaki Williams marked a crucial moment for Ghana by scoring his first goal for the national team, securing a 1-0 victory over Madagascar in Kumasi. The Athletic Bilbao striker, left unmarked in the final moments of added time, headed home a precise cross from Gideon Mensah.

This late goal spared Ghana from a potentially disappointing 0-0 draw, providing a positive start to their 2026 World Cup qualification campaign.

Ghana entered the match under pressure to perform after recent defeats to Mexico and the USA in October. Their initial performance fell below expectations, particularly in the first half, where Madagascar, ranked 48 places to Ghana lower in FIFA rankings, dominated play. Despite having as many goal attempts, Madagascar failed to capitalise on their chances.

Richard Ofori, chosen over Lawrence Ati-Zigi in goal, made a crucial save to keep the score level, while West Ham star Mohammed Kudus played a pivotal role for the Black Stars. However, the first half concluded without a breakthrough for either side.

The second half witnessed an improved Ghana team following strategic substitutions by coach Chris Hughton. The introduction of Majeed Ashimeru and Denis Odoi elevated the team’s performance, with Ashimeru’s dynamic runs and passes causing problems for Madagascar. In a tactical reshuffle, Williams moved to the centre-forward position after Antoine Semenyo left the field, creating more attacking opportunities.

Williams, now a significant threat, came close to scoring multiple times but was initially denied by Madagascar goalkeeper Melvin Adrien. Adrien also thwarted attempts from Kudus and Nuamah before Williams secured the win with a decisive header in the 95th minute.

Despite Madagascar’s commendable performance, the conceded goal was avoidable, as they were sloppy in leaving Williams unmarked. The Madagascar coach, Romuald Felix Rakotondrabe, displayed visible disappointment as Ghana’s players and technical team celebrated Williams’ first goal for the team.

Williams, visibly emotional at full-time, had put in a stellar performance for Ghana. Despite Madagascar’s missed chances in the second half, the Black Stars were relieved to begin their qualification campaign with a victory. The team now look ahead to their next match against Comoros in Moroni on Tuesday.
