Ghana target Inaki Williams was not included in Spain’s Euro 2020 squad missing out on another major tournament.
Head coach Luis Enrique picked five attackers, including Alvaro Morata, Adama Traore and Ferran Torres ahead of the Athletic Bilbao talisman.
Williams pledged his international future to European country where he was born despite being eligible to play for Ghana due to his Ghanaian parents.
Since he made the decision, he has featured once, a friendly match against Bosnia and Herzegovina in 2016. Before that, he played for the Spain U-21 team.
He was named as part of Spain’s standby list for Euro 2016 and two years later, he was not selected for the World Cup in Russia.
His latest snub, however could be a blessing for Ghana Football Association (GFA) who have been chasing the striker since he made his professional debut in 2015.
Williams is eligible to switch nationality because Spain have not used him in a competitive match.
At 26, Williams is running out of time to play at the highest level in international football. Spain clearly don’t value him but Ghana does.
The local football governing body has never hidden their desire to bring Williams. In 2016, GFA through its Spanish scout Gerard Nus tried to convince Williams to choose Black Stars ahead of La Roja.
Early this year, his mother Madam Akua Antwiwaa opened up on the reason behind his son’s decision not to play for Ghana.
“I can’t take the insults and abuse Ghanaians give to their players after failed tournaments and games. It’s too much that parents of their players receive their own share of insults and abuses especially their mothers. Asamoah Gyan’s mum is a typical example” She is reported to have told Sunyani-based Moonlight FM.
Williams’ mother, however, added that she could help the GFA in their pursuit.
“If the Ghana Football Association approaches me to help them, I will, despite the insults and abuse because Inaki recognises Ghana as his home country”.
Williams was born in Bilbao and feels more Spanish than Ghanaian. Three years ago, he represented Basque Country, which is not affiliated to Fifa.
Williams did not miss a league game this season and registered six goals and six assists.
