Ugandan goalkeeper Dennis Onyango has said he will soon hang his national team gloves.

Speaking in an interview with TV3’s Juliet Bawuah, the 35-year-old said the decision is informed by the continuous difficulty in balancing his club and country duties.

“I believe soon I’ll be retiring from the national team because I can’t manage both sides in terms of fatigue and traveling with the club as well as the national team. So, I believe it might be my final few years at the national team and I might hang my gloves.”

The Mamelodi Sundowns player revealed that before he hangs his gloves, he wants to help Uganda play in the 2022 World Cup and also to the Africa Cup of Nations for the third time in a row.

“I believe I’ve done well for the national team, but I still have one more thing that I need to do for the nation and that’s to take the team to the World Cup, which I believe the opportunity is there.

“With the way the group is scheduled, we have a realistic chance but we need to work hard. It’s a better group but for me, in terms of taking the team to the nations cup, and in terms of the last two campaigns, I believe I have done my part. I just need one more silverware and that’s the World Cup and also to go back to the AFCON for the third time in a row.”.

Uganda has been placed in Group E with Mali, Rwanda, and Kenya for the 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.

The Cranes are yet to win the AFCON and have never qualified for the World Cup.
