Ghana coach Chris Hughton has robustly defended the performance of his goalkeeper, Richard Ofori, in the team’s opening defeat against Cape Verde.

Ofori faced criticism for perceived lapses that could have contributed to both goals conceded by the Black Stars.

Hughton emphasised the crucial saves made by Ofori, who, despite limited appearances for his club Orlando Pirates, has reclaimed the starting position for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast.

The goalkeeper displaced Jojo Wollacott, the first choice in the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations, and Lawrence Ati-Zigi, who held the position in the 2022 World Cup.

Ofori’s match performance came under scrutiny after perceived two goalkeeping errors that Cape Verde capitalised on, resulting in a 2-1 defeat for Ghana.

This setback has put the four-time African champions in danger of another early exit, reminiscent of their fate in the previous tournament.

Hughton addressed the criticism in a press conference, stating, “I think anybody watching the first game would have seen Richard Ofori making two very important saves for us. This is what we expect from any of our goalkeepers. We were grateful for his personal performance against Cape Verde.”

Hughton’s remarks indicate that Ofori is likely to retain his place for the crucial upcoming match against Egypt on Thursday. The Black Stars aim to secure victory and revive their prospects in the tournament.
