Hearts of Oak made it three straight wins as they beat Elmina Sharks 2-0 at home on Sunday and move to within two points of Ghana Premier League leaders Asante Kotoko.

The Phobians achieved the victory thanks to second-half strikes by Isaac Mensah and Benjamin Afutu at the Accra Sports Stadium. They came to the rescue after Victor Aidoo missed a penalty three minutes before halftime.

Referee Maxwell Owusu adjudged defender Isaac Donkor to have blocked a goal-bound effort with his hand, but replay shows the ball hit his shoulder.

Donkor was sent off but Aidoo failed to score as goalkeeper Lord Bawa Martey made a great save after coming off his goal line before the kick was taken. Assistant referee raised his flag to signify an infringement but was ignored by the referee.

With a man advantage, the Phobians were the dominant side and they scored on 68 minutes. A horrendous kick by Sharks goalkeeper came off substitute Isaac Mensah to give Hearts the opener.

Hearts sustained the pressure as Sharks could not adjust to their numerical weakness. They doubled their lead when Benjamin Afutu headed into the net with 11 minutes to go.

Hearts travel to face Eleven Wonders on Friday while Sharks host King Faisal in their next game.
