Former Black Stars captain Asamoah Gyan has called for patience from Ghanaians following the team’s uninspiring performance in their 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier against Angola on Thursday.
It was the first game under new coach Chris Hughton, and the Black Stars struggled to assert themselves despite having the lion’s share of possession, according to Gyan.
While acknowledging that the team’s performance left much to be desired, Gyan pointed out that a number of factors, such as weather conditions, may have contributed to their lack of urgency and ambition on the pitch.
However, he stressed that the most important thing was to secure a win, which the team was able to achieve thanks to a late goal from Antoine Semenyo.
“The players were under pressure, the weather condition was a bit hot for them so you could see they were struggling. The movement was a bit slow but the most important thing is getting the victory.
“It’s a gradual process, we have a new coach who is building a team, for me, I think the three points are the most important although we didn’t have the best of game in football, a win is the most important thing.
“Let’s support and be patient with the team,” said the former Sunderland man on Akoma FM.
Ghana will hope for a better performance when they travel to Luanda for the return leg on Monday as the team sought qualification to the next AFCON in Ivory Coast next year.
The Black Stars are currently top of Group E with seven points which has put them in pole position to qualify if they win their next match.
