Dreams FC coach Abdul Karim Zito has advised the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to consider a head coach with grassroots experience to lead the Black Stars.

The GFA revealed a few weeks ago that over 60 coaches had applied for the vacant position following Otto Addo’s exit after Ghana’s poor World Cup campaign in December 2022.

While the GFA have emphasized that a competent coach is their priority, Karim Zito who currently trains the Black Satellites believes Ghana can only be successful if the Black Stars are led by a coach with knowledge in grassroots football.

“A coach with a grassroots background. I prefer we go in for an experienced coach who has grassroots knowledge. The way to handle these boys. When we get such a coach, I think we will go places because, in terms of 1v1 quality, Ghana have quality,” Zito told 3Sports.

The Black Stars finished bottom of Group H at the 2022 World Cup despite showing potential and Zito attributes the drop in performance to the lack of transition from the youth teams to the senior level.

“Even there was a time I compared Ghana to Brazil. We were having a lot goals more than Brazil. But we had a problem with the spinal cord of the team again but I don’t blame them much because what happened to Ghana did not happen to other countries.

“It’s like the transition wasn’t there. For about 12 to 13 years, the U-17, and U-20 never excelled. Till I came last two years where we won two trophies,” he added.

The GFA expected to announce the new head coach of the Black Stars by end of January ahead of the next international window in March.

The new head coach is expected to lead Ghana in their Africa Cup of Nations qualifying doubleheader against Angola in March.
