Ghana striker Jordan Ayew is a major doubt for the 2022 FIFA World Cup play-off against Nigeria as multiple reports claim the Crystal Palace man has contracted the coronavirus.

The 30-year-old missed Crystal Palace’s 4-0 win over Everton in the FA Cup quarter-final on Sunday.

Ayew is in the Black Stars squad, which the Ghana Football Association (GFA) has refused to release, but he is likely to miss the tie.

Also, striker Antoine Semenyo is unlikely to honour his first invitation because of a knee injury he suffered on Saturday while in action for Bristol City.

Semenyo had to be substituted after six minutes in the 2-2 draw against West Brom in the English Championship.

“I don’t know [the extent of the injury] at the moment but obviously he[Antoine Semenyo] is upset at the moment because he’s been called up for the Ghana squad and he’s jarred his knee so we’ll have to see how he is. I can’t give you anymore than that at the moment,” Bristol manager Nigel Pearson said.

All invited players are expected to arrive in Ghana latest by Monday, so preparations can begin on Tuesday. The Black Stars will travel to Kumasi on Tuesday night and hold two training sessions before the first clash on Friday, March 25.

The return leg will be played four days later in Abuja at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium.

The winner of the tie will be in Qatar for the World Cup later this year.
