Ghana is set to embrace American football, introducing the sport to schools across the country, as announced by the Minister of Youth and Sports, Mustapha Ussif.

The initiative is being spearheaded by the office of Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia, who collaborated with the NFL (National Football League) to conduct a special talent development program in 10 selected schools in Ghana last year.

From this tournament, 10 young Ghanaians emerged as standout talents, earning the opportunity to represent Africa at the prestigious 2023 Pro Bowl, a special tournament preceding the renowned Super Bowl.

Encouraged by the success of Ghana’s representatives at the Pro Bowl, the Sports Minister revealed during a press briefing on Wednesday that American football will soon be introduced to school children nationwide.

He expressed excitement about the prospects of this new sport, highlighting the impressive performance of the young Ghanaians, who secured an admirable 4th place among experienced participants from the USA, Mexico, and Australia.

“The partnership with the NFL continues and later this year, the number of participating schools is expected to increase in the 2nd edition of the developmental NFL Flag Football Competition, which will also select the best players for next year’s Pro Bowl,” Ussif said.
