Bayern Munich defender Alphonso Davies claims he was contacted via Instagram by someone from the Ghana Football Association about the possibility of playing for Ghana, but by the time the contact was made, it was too late for him.

Davies, who was born in Buduburam, a refugee camp in Ghana, could have played for Black Stars due to his birthplace.

“Ghana never reached out and also my mum was like, no [to the idea of me playing for Ghana],” he said on the Say Less podcast.

“I was playing like not even like the academy they never like said [anything about wanting me] I wasn’t a big name. When the news came out that I was going to Bayern, then I got a message from the Ghana Federation.

“I think it was someone on the federation he texted me on Instagram because he didn’t have my number or email. But it was too late, at that time I had already got my citizenship and already made it to [represent] Canada.”

The 22-year-old, regarded as one of the best full-backs in the world, obtained Canadian citizenship in 2017 and has made 39 appearances for the Canada national team, scoring 13 goals. Davies scored Canada’s first goal at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Since joining Bayern Munich in 2018, he has won numerous trophies. These trophies include the Champions League and the Club World Cup.
