GFA ExCo member defends George Afriyie sacking

George Afriyie was fired barely a month after openly declaring interest in contesting the GFA presidential elections[/caption] Ghana Football Association Executive Committee member Frank Nelson has defended the decision to fire George Afriyie as Vice President and says it is normal to act if the president of the body feels he cannot work with him again. A former GFA Vice President, Fred Pappoe, has called the decision “unfortunate” and “ill-timed” but Nelson disagrees and insists they have merely acted in the interest of Ghana football. Nelson claims the relationship between Afriyie and Nyantakyi had gotten to the stage where it no longer benefited the sport. “There have been speculations, there had been rumours, there have been issues and confrontation. We all heard that and we all have to face the fact, we all know that there has not been a smooth relationship for the both Nyantakyi and George Afriyie for some years,” he argued. “I think it is always better for someone to divorce a situation that he is not comfortable with so at the end of the day you are not blamed tomorrow because you could not take a decision to do what you were supposed to do. So for me I think is a divorce of an appointment,” Frank Nelson explained to TV3 Sports.
